Track Design and Development
BMX track racing is a fast and exciting sport, and BMX tracks built for fun are growing in popularity as more people realise that BMX biking is a relatively cheap and healthy outdoor activity for young and old. The sport of BMX, from grassroots to international level, has an excellent safety record, and it is in the best interests of everyone that BMX tracks are built to high standard.

Building a BMX track for racing or fun requires careful thought about the design, preparation, construction and maintenance.

What is a pump track?
The first pump tracks were inspired by BMX race courses. Being a family sport, BMX tracks are designed to be ridden by riders of all ages. BMX tracks typically begin with a large hill or mound where riders line up at a starting gate. Upon the green light, riders snap out of the gate, pedal furiously down the hill and negotiate various types of dirt jumps, rollers and large bermed turns on their way to the finish line.
The rhythm section is a staple of BMX and is generally the most technical section of the track. While still rollable, jumping through this section of track is often more difficult, forcing less skilled riders to slow down or employ different techniques to negotiate the features at race speeds.
A pump track is a continuous circuit of banked turns interspaced by rollers and other features that can be ridden on a bike without pedaling.

Types of material
There are two basic types of tracks in terms of the ground material used for the construction. You can either have a simple dirt track covered with gravel or a pump track with dirt foundations and tarmac upper layer. Tarmac is more durable and requires almost no maintenance. On top of that, it can also be used by skaters and scooter riders. Gravel track is vulnerable when ridden after rain and should be maintained by the shovel crew at least once a month, depending on the intensity of shredding. With gravel tracks it is easier and less expensive to modify as you go.
